MEDICE: With “a new quality of therapy” and a “consistent sustainability strategy” to the finals of the German Sustainability Award Companies 2027

The transformation of MEDICE has prompted the jury of the German Sustainability Award to nominate the Iserlohn-based pharmaceutical developer and manufacturer for the finals in the “Corporations” size category. In doing so, the jury is already recognizing MEDICE as a company that drives sustainable change with innovative solutions.

Pharmacy at a new level

“Health is much more to us than just drug therapy,” says Managing Partner Dr. med. Katja Pütter-Ammer, describing the family-owned company’s aspiration to completely rethink pharmacy for its patients. MEDICE, which is growing strongly in the indications ADHD, mental health, nephrology, urology, women’s health and gut health, therefore operates under the umbrella brand “Health Family”. This describes the company’s path towards a new, holistic and patient-oriented approach. It combines high-quality medicines, digital health applications and preventive nutritional medicine into integrative therapy concepts that are continuously being expanded for patients across all MEDICE indications.

With its particular transformation, the company demonstrates how modern healthcare solutions and ecological responsibility can be combined in practice. “Sustainability is not a separate additional topic for us. It is the consequence of our aspiration to take a comprehensive view of health. Because physical, mental, social and ecological health are inextricably linked,” says physician Pütter-Ammer. Following this principle, the Iserlohn-based company also takes into account the conditions under which its medicines and other medical-therapeutic activities are developed, manufactured and distributed. The decarbonization of its sites and the efficient use of resources play a particularly important role in this. The successes can be measured: Between 2015 and 2025, MEDICE doubled the production of pharmaceutical packs, while market-based Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions were halved*. This was made possible, among other things, by shutting down the gas-fired combined heat and power plants at the company’s Iserlohn site, connecting to the district heating network, expanding photovoltaics, electricity from renewable sources and expanding the electrification of the vehicle fleet.

Award for MEDICE subsidiary already last year

Last year, the MEDICE subsidiary Green Guides received the German Sustainability Award in the Companies Testing & Consulting category. The jury regarded the company as a key driver of a resource-efficient food industry. The MEDICE subsidiary supports commercial kitchens and caterers in specifically reducing food waste and using resources more efficiently. FOODPRiNT4U also assesses the environmental and health impacts of meals and makes them transparent for more sustainable meal planning.

Award ceremony with a European perspective

On 3 December 2026, the winners of the German Sustainability Award will be honored at #DNP26 in Düsseldorf. They will represent Germany as National Champions Germany in the European competition.

* The term “Scopes” originates from the “Greenhouse Gas Protocol”, the international standard for recording greenhouse gas emissions. Depending on the origin of the emissions, they are divided into three categories (Scopes):

  • Scope 1: direct emissions from company-owned sources (e.g. stationary combustion of gas for heating, own vehicle fleet, etc.).

  • Scope 2: indirect emissions from purchased energy (e.g. electricity or district heating).

  • Scope 3: all other indirect emissions along the upstream and downstream value chain (e.g. procurement of raw materials, product disposal, etc.).
