Our company history

It has been over 75 years since Gustav Pütter founded MEDICE in Iserlohn to provide medical care to the local population. This idea – of looking after people – laid the foundation for our company’s rapid development, culminating in its transformation into the MEDICE Health Family – a provider and developer of multimodal healthcare solutions.

We’d like to take you on a journey through the history of MEDICE – brought to life visually in our company film.

The year is 1949. Post-war Germany. A phrase that seems as faded as the memories we have of that time. It is a bleak place. A country in survival mode. Yet there are also people who see an entrepreneurial opportunity in rebuilding their devastated homeland. One of them is Gustav Pütter, the inventor of the Pütter dressing, named after him and still on the market today.

It is a special seed that he plants in the soil of Iserlohn, from which MEDICE has developed into what it is today: a family-run, integrated company focused on healthcare solutions, with clear values: forward-looking, value-creating and family-oriented. The road to get there, however, is a long one.

Gustav Pütter began by manufacturing herbal medicines. His son Sigurd, a dedicated medical professional, invested in modern technology and logistics, transforming MEDICE into a modern pharmaceutical company. Then, in the 1990s, came the move into the prescription medicines business: he acquired the nephrology division of Dietl Pharma. Towards the end of the 1990s, he took the next decisive step: at the suggestion of many paediatricians, MEDICE developed the ADHD medicine Medikinet®.

The third generation – with a firm eye on the future

In 2002, Sigurd Pütter’s daughter Katja and, shortly afterwards, her husband Richard Ammer – both of whom were also doctors – joined the company. Together with their father, they systematically expanded the company’s market position, modernised the entire corporate structure, internationalised sales and, whilst their father was still alive (he passed away in 2021), acquired the OTC division of Rentschler-Pharma and a majority stake in the long-established company Schaper & Brümmer. Further investments in the fields of digital health, gut health and sustainability management were added, rounding off the strategic investment portfolio. The door to the future is wide open.

In 2022, MEDICE became the MEDICE Health Family.
