Neurogenic bladder dysfunction

Neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) is a bladder dysfunction that refers to the uncontrolled contraction of the bladder muscle (detrusor) as a result of an acquired or congenital neurological disorder. These include, for example, spinal cord damage caused by paraplegia, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease or a stroke. Overactivity of the bladder muscle can lead to involuntary urine loss (incontinence), but also to the loss of the ability to empty the bladder, with the risk of damage to the kidneys due to urine retention.

Therapy options

Depending on its severity, neurogenic detrusor overactivity is treated conservatively with bladder and pelvic floor training, medically with antimuscarinic substances (anticholinergics, as tablets or instilled directly into the bladder), minimally invasively or surgically with sacral neuromodulation or bladder augmentation.

In sacral neuromodulation, a small device implanted under the skin sends electrical impulses to the nerves that control the bladder, bowel and pelvic floor muscles.

Bladder augmentation is considered a last resort, whereby the bladder is enlarged with a piece of small intestine, making the bladder wall more elastic.

MEDICE Neuro-Urology

The MEDICE Health Family focuses on the patient. Thanks to its many years of experience as a specialised provider and close communication with doctors and patients, the MEDICE Health Family has developed a comprehensive understanding of the therapeutic needs of chronically ill patients.

With the needs of those affected in mind, our goal is to provide patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction with individualised therapy and needs-based service solutions to support them in their social activities and improve their quality of life.

Our engagement

We are pleased to be members and supporters of the Fördergemeinschaft der Querschnittsgelähmten in Deutschland e.V. (FGQ) and the Para Sport Gemeinschaft (PSG) Halle. This will enable us to support the work and the organization of events by the Fördergemeinschaft and the PSG association.

The FGQ advocates for the interests of people with spinal cord injuries and develops projects and concepts that improve the quality of life and self-determination of those affected.

The Para Sport Gemeinschaft Halle offers a wide range of sports for people with and without disabilities, creating an inclusive platform that strengthens exchange and community. The PSG also enables people with disabilities to participate in competitive sports.

Together, both patient organizations are committed to breaking down barriers and enabling people with disabilities to participate fully in society.
